Qld S Big Beef Portfolios Downsized In Big Dry

Drought across Northern Australia's dress-circle Barkly Tableland and channel country grazing regions has been a significant influence over changes in size and caribbean dress shape of many of the country's largest beef enterprises this year.
In many cases, cattle numbers among the Top 10 producers in Queensland have declined this year, as dry cattle and breeders exposed to drought have been disposed of, either through store sales, live export, or to the meatworks.
In other cases, additional properties have been purchased as a strategic measure to provide breathing space, until seasonal rain relief arrives in the northwest.
These holdings may be turned over when normal seasonal patterns return, or remain as part of the company portfolios long-term.
The rate of internal development of existing company holdings has also slowed this year, due to the shaky state of the economy and cotton wedding dress lending environment. Last year, internal expansion driven by water and other infrastructure improvements, rather than land acquisition, was a strong feature fuelling growth of some of the nation's major cattle producers.
One of the few major northern players to increase their herd size this year has been the nation's second largest producer, Consolidated Pastoral Co. CPC escaped the worst of the drought on the Barkly, and striped dress increased its herd size to 305,000 head as a result of two property purchases ? Ucharonidge, a 247,000ha property adjacent to Newcastle Waters,a second, smaller extension to Isis Downs in Central Western Queensland.
