Arlington School District Continues To Explore Standardized Dress Code

ARLINGTON A conversation that Arlington school district trustees began this year about standardizing what students wear to class continues tonight as board members hear how other area districts have handled the issue.
Arlington, which has about 63,000 students, has 14 schools that have decided to have uniforms. Last spring, a committee of parents, staff and students asked the board to consider a standardized dress policy districtwide for the 2009-10 school year.
Standardized dress is a less strict option than school uniforms. It gives students more options for manufacturers and styles. For example, in Fort Worth, elementary school students are allowed to wear navy or white shirts with sleeves and collars, mock turtlenecks or turtlenecks. Pants can be navy, khaki, hooded dress black or blue denim.
Some campuses allow other fabric colors, such as red shirts or plaid jumpers for girls.
Proponents of standardized dress policies say it helps children and teachers focus on education and creates a more disciplined, safe environment. Opponents worry that it stifles students individuality.
Arlington Trustee Sherri Wade has been a supporter of standardized dress for several years. She teaches speech and English at Kennedale High School and ladybug dress said that district s standardized dress policy has improved behavior and made 'a huge difference in how the kids treated each other.'
'What I would really like to see is the district try this for a year and re-evaluate it afterward,' Wade said.
To prepare for tonight s presentation, shirt dress pattern Arlington officials talked with administrators in two Dallas County districts as well as representatives from Crowley, Fort Worth, BirdvilleKennedale about their policies. They had good things to say about standardized dress, said Malcolm TurnerArlington s executive director of student services.
