Lady Bearcats Finish Third!

GRAFTON -- Third place out of nine teams is not too bad, especially when you are in the region that annually produces two of West Virginias finest Class AA Cheerleading SquadsLincoln and Liberty.
Lincoln came into last Saturdays competition at the Rockefeller Center on the Campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon as the defending state champions.
The Lady Cougars have won several state titles in cheerleading, and likewise the Lady Mountaineers of Liberty have won a few state titles of their own.
Our girls did a pretty good job, said Grafton High Schools Cheerleading Coach Crystal Morris. We scored a total of 262.75 points, which I believe is about the best that we have ever done, but if our routine would be been a little cleaner and crisper, I think we could have seriously challenged Lincoln for second place and a berth in the state competition.
We had a very young squad, mostly freshmen and sophomores, so I am looking forward to the next few cheerleading competitions, Coach Morris added.
Graftons cheerleaders -- Amber Kirkpatrick, Emily Rowand, Alex Witkowski, Brittney Hose, Kayla Wolfe, Bobbi Phillips, Caity Bryan, Chatera Morris, Abby Daetwyler, Morgan Lantz, Korey Rucker, Jessica Smith, Paige Zeck, Anissa Cline and rent a dress Kelley Baker -- as well as mascots -- Brittany Frey, Michelle Harris and turquoise dress Kim Poling -- finished third in this years event.
Liberty amassed a winning total of 333.25 points and cinderella dress up games claimed the regional championship, while Lincoln finished second with a total of 302.1 points and claimed the runner-up position. The top two teams from each region have advanced into the state competition, which will be held on Saturday, December 13 at the Charleston Civic Center.
Grafton was third with 262.75 points, followed by Berkeley Springs with 256.25 points, Petersburg with 238.00 points, Braxton County with 250.50 points; Frankfort with 238.50 points, Philip Barbour with 216.25 points, and Keyser with 210.00 points.
It should also be pointed out that there was not a level playing field for this regional competition, since the girls from Liberty and Lincoln were at home in their warm beds getting plenty of rest for Saturdays event.
You see, the Liberty and Lincoln football seasons ended on week-10, but Grafton had a week-11 game in New Martinsville. So the Lady Bearcats had to cheer at that game, get home in the wee hours of Saturday morning, catch a few hours of sleep, get up, get readythen travel to Buckhannon...How is that not a major disadvantage?
Nevertheless, here is a look at some of Graftons routine, as they underwent a dress rehearsal in the Grafton High School on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.
Congratulations girls!
