Greeks Rehearse Song, Dance

Sandy, clad in leather pants and red pumps, sang her heart out to Danny Wednesday night at Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
The Greek Sing overall committee listened to familiar tunes, like 'Summer Nights' and 'Greased Lightning,' as Alpha Chi Omega and Sigma Phi Epsilon performed part of their show planned for Greek Sing on Nov. 2.
The overall committee hurried to twenty fraternity houses and dorms to see the second dress rehearsal of each musical performance from 4 until about 9:30 Wednesday night.
The second dress rehearsal is a chance for the overalls to make sure organizations are moving forward with their performances and give feedback and cinderella dress up games constructive criticism, Dan Alexander, Greek Sing overall chairman, said.
Some of the musicals this year include Hairspray, Aladdin and Footloose. There are 21 musicals this year being performed by 57 greek organizations, according to the Greek Sing Web site. Important aspects of a Greek Sing performance include choreography, costumes, songs and overall energy of the group.
Alexander said it was difficult to have the overall committee running around all night but this new system was much better than in years past.
'This dress rehearsal used to be
in the HUB Auditorium but the stage is way too small and the overall committee isn't able to see the talent,' Alexander (senior-architectural engineering) said. 'Having the rehearsal at the organizations' place allows them to be more comfortable since it's where they usually rehearse.'
It's hard for the organizations to get everything together for Greek Sing because it's right on the heel of Homecoming, he said, adding he was impressed with the performances Wednesday night.
For Greek Sing, each fraternity and bandage dress sorority pair or trio is assigned a musical. About 30 musicals are chosen by the stage manager and then the organizations pick their musical out of a hat, said Liz Liberati, Greek Sing public relations overall chairwoman. Usually the musicals chosen are really fun and have good songs to sing, she added.
The organizations are given either eight or six minutes to perform their rendition of the musical they were assigned. The eight-minute performances are awarded to the teams of greeks that best exhibit their talent in the first rehearsal seen by the overall committee. Rules and turquoise dress Regulations Overall Chairman Adam Nye said giving a team the shorter performance is not necessarily a punishment.
'The short performance, which is six minutes, is a lot less work,' Nye (junior-education public policy) said. 'The short performance gives organizations that aren't ready more time; they're only docked so they can work harder.'
There are winners in both time categories, Nye added.
Greek Sing gives greek organizations a way to show their talent, Alexander said.
'It's a way to have fun and get a little competitive juice flowing between the organization,' he said.
The profits from the performance go to the Gayle Beyers scholarship fund. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding woman in the Panhellenic Council and an outstanding Interfraternity Council man.
Anyone can attend Greek Sing, which will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 2 in Eisenhower Auditorium. Tickets are $9 and will be on sale to greek organizations todayto the public on Oct. 27.
