New School Board Member Pushes Standard Mode Of Dress

A new member of the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education suggested this week that the board tackle a sometimes-controversial issue.
Patsy Simpson, one of three new board members elected in November, said the board may need to put in place a standard mode of dress.
Typically, that involves requiring students to wear clothing such as khaki pants and collared shirts.
Simpson said the standard mode of dress could be phased in by grade level, starting with kindergarten or pre-kindergarten students.
Her comments came as the board approved a new dress code for students. School system leaders had said one goal of adjusting the dress code is to achieve more consistent enforcement of violations.
The policy outlines types of clothing that are too revealing to be acceptable, such as clothes that are too short or tight, sag or expose underwear or show cleavage.
Simpson said she's seen the school board discuss student dress from time to time and questioned if there is a better way to handle the issue than 'chasing trends and fishtail dress patterns' by periodically making changes.
She said if it's true that how students dress can make a significant difference in academics and cotton wedding dress discipline, 'we need to just bite the bullet and do the hard thing.
'I was elected to do what is best for the students and ombre dress to raise academic achievement,' Simpson said. 'At least that was my platform.'
Other board members didn't sound hostile to the idea of a standard code of dress, but expressed concern about putting one in place if parents don't support it.
'It's all about community buy-in,' said Jackie Cole.
Superintendent Randy Bridges said the dress-code change the board went on to approve is 'just a policy update' and said putting in place a standard code of dress would be 'a separate conversation.'
ColeTom Manning, the school board's chairman, suggested the board discuss potential further rules about student dress during a retreat meeting scheduled for January.
